I am so thrilled to celebrate Christmas 2010 with a special series of interviews with just a few of the most amazingly talented and inspiring people I know. First to share her favourite Christmas memories and styling tips from gorgeous Jess, founder of Oscar & Ruby, boutique event planning & styling. (and wow, what a cute kid she was!)
What do you love about Christmas?
I love that feeling of anticipation, the week leading up to Christmas. There is always a real buzz in the air as everyone knows they are heading towards at least a few days off work.
The weather is always hot. Trips to the beach, picnics and afternoon drinks are being planned. Connections are being made with friends and family we haven’t seen for a while.
Oh, and I have to mention the smell of real Christmas trees at my local greengrocer gives me goosebumps every time I shop!
How will you be spending Christmas this year?
This Christmas is my husbands birthday (well, it is every year!). And seeing as it is our first Christmas as a married couple, I am making sure the focus is well and truly on him. We will have dinner with his parents Christmas Eve. Breakfast with mine Christmas Day, then we are packing our car, hitching the bikes on the back and heading off on a road trip to Melbourne. Stopping at a hotel on the way to celebrate his birthday with a nice romantic dinner for two. I can’t wait.
What is your fail-safe Christmas styling tip?
Stick to a colour scheme. Anything goes really, silver/pink, gold/blue, red/green. As long as you keep it simple.
My favorite place for interesting decorations is without a doubt, Ruby Star Traders. They have a huge selection of handmade and quirky baubles etc available to buy all year round. It’s a great place to pick up beautiful wrapping paper too. At $1 a roll it’s a bargain!
What is your favourite Christmas memory?
My favourite Christmas memory is when we were little, my brother, sister and I would pile into my Dad’s old red bomb of a station wagon and head off to the Cumberland State Forest to buy a real Christmas tree from the Rotary guys. We took this job very seriously, wanting to bring home the biggest, fattest, greenest tree possible. Of course when Dad would put the biggest, fattest tree in the car, along with the three of us, it was a tigh
t squeeze. We would sing Christmas carols at the top of our lungs all the way home, ignoring the severe rash appearing all over our arms and face from the scratchy pine needles. It was always a proud moment arriving home to show Mum the amazing tree we had found, even though it always had to be chopped down as it was always too tall for our ceiling!
What’s on your list to Santa this year?
On my wish list this year is a Canon EOS 60D DSLR, or a set of eight Philippe Starck Louis ghost chairs to sit around our reclaimed wooden door/dining room table. Or, I’ll be happy with 14 days straight of sunshine so we can ride our bikes around Melbourne, looking for adventure.
Jess, thank you for sharing your special Christmas memories with Amour Amour. We will be crossing our fingers for a happy, sunny Christmas for you and your new husband! (and hoping you can snap away on that new Canon!) You can keep up to date with Jess’s adventures at her blog.
Tomorrow Polkadot Bride herself, the lovely Ms Polka shares her romantic Christmas wishes.
